Course Descriptions

EDZU 9006 Secondary Reading/Decoding ELL

This course focuses on teaching reading with a special emphasis of working with English Language Learners by identifying, explaining and applying 30 Research-Based Reading Strategies that help students read, understand and learn content from textbooks and other non-fiction materials.

EDZU 9007 Reading AssessmentToggle Title

This course focuses on reading assessment systems. The administration, analysis and interpretation of informal diagnostic procedures will be utilized. The application of research based strategies will be explored as a means to improve assessment results and facilitate greater student reading success.

EDZU 9008 Elements of Content Area Reading & Writing Instruction (6-12)

This course focuses on the elements of content area reading and writing for grades sixth through twelfth grade. Practical ways to study words, increase comprehension, improve writing and apply research-based strategies are provided.

EDZU 9023 Essential Elements of Reading & Writing Instruction (6-12)

This course focuses on the essential elements of reading and writing for grades sixth through twelfth grade. Practical ways to study words, increase comprehension, improve writing and apply research-based strategies are provided.

EDZU 9024 Elements of Content Area Reading and Writing (K-8)

This course focuses on the elements of content area reading and writing for grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Practical ways to study words, increase comprehension, improve writing and apply research-based strategies are provided.

EDZU 9480 Practicum for Reading

The course focuses on the (practicum) practical application of current philosophical theories, methods, and models of assessment and instruction for the remediation of reading.

EDZU 9482 Research Based Systematic Phonics

This course will emphasize research that supports the importance of systematic phonics within a language arts program. The student will review the research, apply the research to practical daily activities that can be used immediately, and learn how to assess student progress to create a balanced literacy program for developing and at-risk students. The student will develop a supplemental research-based systematic phonics instructional program as a major course of study.

EDZU 9481 Elementary Reading and Decoding

The course focuses on the application of theories, methods, and models of the teaching and learning processes of reading.

EDZU 9479 Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading

This course will focus on the administration, analysis and interpretation of informal diagnostic procedures. The use of assessment results will drive students’ remediation plans and instructional techniques to facilitate reading success.

EDZU 9465 Multicultural Children’s Literature

This course will use multicultural books to survey pluralism and linguistic diversity in American education. Students will analyze folk and modern literature, including application of literary criteria to these selections. Students will explore means of teaching using multicultural literature to encourage diverse learners and learning styles. Students will evaluate literature for its literary value as well as cultural acceptability.
